Why?
Avocados contain persin, a fungicidal toxin that can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and in serious cases fluid accumulation around the heart and lungs. The highest concentration is in the leaves, skin, and pit โ but the flesh also contains persin.
How much can dogs have?
NONE. The risk is not worth it.
What to watch out for
Watch for breathing difficulty, fluid retention, weakness, and inability to exercise. The pit is also a choking and blockage hazard. Guacamole adds garlic and onion making it doubly toxic.
๐จ If your dog ate avocado: Contact your vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 right away. Don't wait for symptoms โ many toxins act internally before signs appear.
