Why?
Cheese is high in protein, calcium, and vitamins A and B12. It is a high-value reward often used in training. However, it is also very high in fat and calories, and some dogs cannot digest dairy well.
How much can dogs have?
A small cube or two as a treat or for giving medication. Low-fat varieties like mozzarella or cottage cheese are better options.
What to watch out for
Some dogs are lactose intolerant and will get diarrhea from dairy. Very high in fat and calories — not suitable for overweight dogs or those with pancreatitis. Avoid high-sodium cheeses like feta or blue cheese.
