Why?
Cherry pits, stems, and leaves contain cyanogenic glycosides which release cyanide. While the flesh is not toxic, the risk of cyanide poisoning from pit ingestion and the choking hazard make cherries an unsafe choice.
How much can dogs have?
Avoid. The risk is not worth it when safer fruits are available.
What to watch out for
If a dog ingests cherry pits watch for dilated pupils, difficulty breathing, and red gums. Can progress to shock and death. The pit is also a choking hazard.
