Why?
Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine — both methylxanthines that dogs cannot metabolize effectively. They build up in the body and cause toxic effects. Dark chocolate, baking chocolate, and cocoa powder are the most dangerous. Milk chocolate is less concentrated but still harmful in large quantities.
How much can dogs have?
NONE. Zero chocolate of any kind should ever be fed to a dog.
What to watch out for
Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst, rapid heart rate, tremors, and seizures. Can be fatal. If your dog ate chocolate, call a vet immediately. Dark chocolate is a medical emergency.
