Why?
Garlic is in the allium family along with onions, leeks, and chives. It contains thiosulfate which oxidizes and damages red blood cells. It is 5 times more toxic than onions by weight. Small amounts over time can accumulate to toxic levels.
How much can dogs have?
NONE. Many dog owners believe garlic is safe as a flea repellent — it is not. This is a dangerous myth.
What to watch out for
Damage to blood cells may not show for several days. Symptoms include pale gums, weakness, vomiting, rapid breathing, and collapse. Japanese breeds (Akita, Shiba Inu) are especially sensitive.
