Why?
Xylitol is an artificial sweetener found in sugar-free gum, some peanut butters, candy, baked goods, and increasingly in more products. It causes a massive release of insulin in dogs, rapidly dropping blood sugar to dangerous levels. It can also cause liver failure.
How much can dogs have?
NONE. Zero. Check all product labels before giving to your dog.
What to watch out for
Symptoms appear within 10–60 minutes — include vomiting, weakness, tremors, seizures, and loss of coordination. This is always a life-threatening emergency requiring immediate vet care.
