Why?
Dogs cannot process alcohol the same way humans do. Their livers are not equipped to metabolize ethanol. Even small amounts can cause vomiting, diarrhea, breathing difficulty, dangerously low blood sugar, coma, and death.
How much can dogs have?
NONE. Not even a lick. This includes beer, wine, spirits, and foods cooked with alcohol.
What to watch out for
Alcohol acts quickly in dogs due to their smaller body size and different metabolism. Signs include disorientation, lethargy, vomiting, collapse, and seizures. This is a medical emergency.
๐จ If your dog ate alcohol: Contact your vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 right away. Don't wait for symptoms โ many toxins act internally before signs appear.
